Abstract

The article focuses on the importance of public transport service to the economic, social and ecological
environment of the country. Inefficient management of the service accounts for one of several reasons for traffic
jams, pollution and reduced mobility of the city population. Based on the experience of other countries (the UK,
Australia and Japan), a private operator is seen as a more efficient manager of the services discussed.
A transfer of the service management in favour of the private operator enables the increase of quality, amount
of transit, encouragement of innovations. This corresponds to the tenets of the New Public Management, being
recently stressed by the EU regarding services management.
Furthermore, attention is drawn to the fact that a transfer of good practice in full amount is impossible due to
different reasons of the problem and peculiarities of local markets. Therefore, the answer to the problem in a
particular country lies in following the tenets of NPM rather than copying models of other countries.
